February 8, Wisconsin's First Ladies meeting, 2:00-4:00, Old Madison Room at the UW Memorial Union. Nancy Williams will speak about her book on these women. Leslie Bellais, curator of costumes for the WI Historical Society, will join us and model several historic dresses.

May 18, Forest Hill Cemetery tour. Tour theme was university administrators.

June 1, Alternate Parade of Homes, Old Market Place, 1 to 5 p.m. We also focused walk bys on some of the early African-American homes in the neighborhood. Let us know if you would like a brochure of the event.

October 25, Historic Madison's Annual meeting. Jack Holzhueter will be speaking on "The Arts in Madison's History" at the Madison Club, 11-2. The event includes a silent auction and brunch. Send checks for $20 to Nancy Finley, 360 W. Washington Avenue, #1008, Madison, 53703.

May 10-15, Back by popular demand, the new documentary titled, " Streets Without Cars: The Urban Experiment of State Street" was shown at the Orpheum at multiple showings. It aired on WHA-TV in July, 2002.

May 5, bike tour along Lake Monona, 10:00 and 2:00 from the parking lot next to Williamson Bicycle Works at the intersection of Williamson Street, South Blount Street, and John Nolen Drive. The leisurely four-mile ride stopped at nine sites along the route to point out features of historical interest.

May 19, Forest Hill cemetery tour, 1-4 p.m. Gathered at the Catlin Chapel, One Speedway Road. This year's tour included the LaFollette graves.

June 23, Tales of Historic State Street tour, 1 p.m. Gather in front of the Children's Museum in the 100 block of State Street.

October 13, Indian mound tour, 1 p.m. Gathered at Mendota Hospital parking lot at the end of Troy Drive. Bob Birmingham, archaeologist for the WHS, conducted the tour.

November 12, Release of Zane Williams' Double Take: A Rephotographic Survey of Madison, WI. Publication celebration is being held at the Orpheum Theater, 216 State Street, 4:30-6:30 p.m.

November 19, Forest Hill Cemetery book reading, 12:15 p.m. Part of the History Sandwiched in series at the WI Historical Society museum, 30 N. Carroll Street, our own Mark Gajewski touched on stories of several individuals included in our new book. Copies of the book should be available in stores this week.

December 2, Historic Madison's annual meeting, 6:00, Tripp Commons at the UW Memorial Union. The topic was the revised second edition of the Forest Hill Cemetery book.

November 15, 6-9 p.m., Historic Madison's annual meeting. Robert Worm will provide a tour of the Hotel Ruby Marie, An after dinner speaker is planned. Dinner at the Essen Haus. October 20, Alternate Parade of Homes in the Highland Park area of the Regent Neighborhood, 11-5 p.m.

October 19, A stamp celebration honored James Madison's 250th birthday. The second-day-of-issue event took place at the Municipal Building at 10:30 a.m. near the Madison bust. Rebroadcasts of the cermony can be viewed on City Channel 12 on November 23 at 5:00 pm, November 25 at 10:00 pm, December 2 at 8:00 pm.

October 7, Jewish Students and Professors at the UW-Madison Prior to World War II. MATC History Professor Jonathan Pollack presented a summary of his research on anti-Semitism faced by Jewish students at the University of Wisconsin between WWI and WWII. Professor Jonathan Pollack of MATC presented this program at 2:00 p.m.

September 16, 2 p.m. Ledell Zellers hosted a hands-on restoration program emphasizing the challenges which buyers of older homes must deal with. The event took place at the Old Executive Mansion on E. Gilman Street.

September 9, Presentation of early Jewish immigrants in Madison. Iza and Carol Goroff, retired faculty members of UW-Whitewater, showed us photos of the homes of Madison's early Jewish immigrants, particularly of Greenbush. The event took place at 2:00 p.m., Beth Israel Center at 1406 Mound Street.

June 10, Forest Hill Cemetery tour focused on Jewish citizens. Cemetery researchers appeared in costume.

February 18, 2 p.m., a lecture/slide presentation by Lois Stoler talking about the Gates of Heaven Synagogue and its relocation history. It was held, appropriately, at the synagogue itself, which is now a city-owned building in James Madison Park.

2000

A historical marker has been installed at Resurrection Cemetery to commemorate the burial spot of those originally buried in Greenbush Cemetery. The marker was installed on November 14.

November 14, 7 p.m., Historic Madison's Annual meeting. Presentation on Frank Lloyd Wright's Relationship with Madison. Mary Jane Hamilton and David Mollenhoff made the presentation.

June 11, Native American mounds tour took place at Mendota.

Thursday, March 23, 7:30-9:00 p.m., members of the Ceramics Art Collectors Association presented a program about ceramics in Madison at the Monona Terrace.

On February 22, the Assembly Education committee held a hearing on AB601 which would formally recognize James Madison's birthday in Wisconsin for school children. Ultimately, the bill did not pass.

1999

Nov 18, 7-9pm: Annual Meeting: "To Save or Not to Save:" Historic Preservation in Madison at Gates of Heaven Synagogue, James Madison Park. Richard Wagner gave a slide-presentation on the history of historic preservation in Madison. Following the presentation were the annual elections and a business meeting to adopt new bylaws. At the meeting, former Madison mayor Paul Soglin was honored by Madison Magazine as their choice for "Man of the Century." Publisher Jennifer Winiger and writer Stuart Levitan made the presentation.

Oct 10, 11-5pm: Alternate Parade of Homes, Vilas Neighborhood's Oakland Heights. Why build a new home when you can have the fun of living in an older home and restore it? Seven homes were available for touring.

Sep 26, 2-4 pm: Olbrich Gardens: History and Beauty program with Historic Blooming Grove. William Fletcher Thompson, former state historian and author, spoke and led a discussion on the history of the gardens.

May 13: Historic Madison acquired the McVicar, Stein, and Wollin photograph collections from Tim Romano. They were transferred to the State Historical Society that afternoon.

1998

Historic Madison celebrated Wisconsin's Sesquicentennial.

Historic Madison hosted Frank Lloyd Wright film festival and public program for grand opening of Monona Terrace Convention Center July 18-20, 1997.

HMI celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Thornton Wilder.
